The new Tariffs are beginning to affect prices in the USA

Main Post:

I work in an adult store and unfortunately, we have already started to see the effects of some of the tariffs being placed. I wasn’t sure how this would affect the price of things in the USA, but it’s looking bleak so far.

When my boss sent out the list, he said this was only the first of many price increases that we would see from the tariffs. The vendors we buy from actually sent him the list themselves, so it isn’t something that we just created. He said that it is likely that almost every company we order from will send out a list.

The price changes were anywhere from $5-$200. I’m very concerned about the future of this industry, and honestly, America in general.. some of these products were already overpriced anyways. I’m not sure if people will be able to afford luxury products (like adult items) in the future. What do others think?

Top Comment: We really need to have the prices labeled with the tariff amount included. People need to understand it’s not inflation or something Biden did; it is the tariffs. Maybe even label them Tr()mp Tariffs.

What types of products should we buy now before prices skyrocket?

Main Post:

Remember what happened to store shelves during the pandemic? Trying to think proactively here in advance, because we live near the ports and get visual reminders every day of what's to come in about 1 month

Top Comment: Non perishables that you need to survive on.

Has anyone else noticed price increases in the last two months?

Main Post:

I will say that I am extremely fortunate that I don't typically have to check prices at the grocery store. During my weekly shopping at Trader Joe's, I got my usual things and my groceries rung up as 20% more expensive than usual. While I could technically afford the cost, I have other financial priorities. I will now be meal prepping more, cutting back on premade foods and being careful about what I'm buying.

I am getting worried that inflation is getting a lot worse again. Has anyone else noticed prices increases?

Edit: was not trying to make this political, just was wondering if anyone else has noticed.

Top Comment: Yes our grocery bill has been up about $20-30 a week on average. However, we added a meal to the grocery list and have started eating out less so we’ve seen it balance out some. Still seeing that cost increase. Our utilities also seem to be higher this year than they were last year. Everything is just more expensive

The price is absolutely ridiculous

Main Post:

I’m totally fine with the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 console. $450 seems like a reasonable price for a new gaming system.

However the price of everything else is an issue. Nobody wants to pay $80-$90 USD for a new game. Even with all new features, nothing in that Direct screams $80. An extra pair of Joy Cons is $90?!?!?! The console manual isn’t free and having to pay extra to upgrade old games even if you have them in your library is ridiculous.

Overall the announcement of the prices is killing the hype people are having.

Edit: Thanks for all of the engagement and the upvotes!! Personally I think I’ll wait for it on sale or wait for Nintendo to release a Switch 2 lite version.

Edit2: I now know that the whole $80-$90 price range isn’t for USD my apologies

Top Comment: The selling of the manual/tour is actually pretty damn petty on Nintendo’s part

ELI5: how does pricing of products work?

Main Post:

Hello, i'm wondering how pricing works. Like, how do businesses decide how to price an item a certain amount? and why do certain things cost how as much as they do?

It's never really made sense to me how pricing works, and because of that, I don't really know how to make money or make a profit on my own.

I would appreciate any detailed explanations, I would love to learn more about how this works, thank you for reading

Top Comment: Breaking it down, there are three approaches. None of them give an "answer" but they give some reasonable boundary around which a subjective decision can be made on pricing. Pricing itself is dynamic and for businesses of any complexity, there is no "right price". Big customers get discounted pricing, smaller one-off customers pay higher prices, volume purchase agreements over long term may get lower pricing, etc etc. Bottom up approach. Basically figure out what it costs to make and deliver the product or service. Parts pricing, transportation, labor and things like insurance, rent, utilities etc etc. Estimate how much will be sold. Determine what minimum profits is desired. The unit price should be higher than the cost + profit. Sideways approach. Evaluate the competition. Look at competitive and substitute products. Determine how your product fits in this market. Estimate the value your product relative to the competition and price accordingly. Top down or value based approach. Try to determine what customers can and will pay for certain aspects of the product. Adjust the specification and quality of the product to manage the value to customer at a certain price that the customer will pay. Pricing is part art and part science. It can get very complicated and detailed data and requires a diverse and creative approach as it can make or break the business. Very often in big companies, only senior executives with years of industry experience are involved in final pricing decisions due to its importance.

Top Comment: Kroger’s is the worst, hamburger meat is $7 a pound at the one’s in my area. That’s almost double from 2022.
